The dance team’s InspireDance education programme is expanding in the New Year with THIRTEEN new schools coming on board! These schools include primary and secondary schools from across the county – meaning high quality dance provision will be spreading right across Lincolnshire!
The dance team will be working closely with these schools to support them to develop and improve their current dance offer to pupils, offering a bespoke service which will meet each of the school’s individual needs. This support may include providing ideas of how to form cross-curricula links using dance, guidance on enhancing boys engagement in dance, and upskilling teachers through teacher training and mentoring. Whatever support the team provide one thing is for sure, 2014 is going to be an exciting year for dance in education in Lincolnshire!

NDTA Conference, 23rd November 2013
This year Holly and Alice from the Dance Team attended the National Dance Teachers Association Conference at Trinity Laban in London. The theme for this year’s event was dance in the school curriculum and through a number of workshops, seminars, and keynote speakers topics such as how to implement the new school curriculum, ideas for teaching curriculum dance, and the issues facing dance in schools were debated and discussed.
Alice also attended a session where examples of current research on dance in education were outlined including presentations by Lizzie Swinford (Researcher and Dance Teacher) on the role that ‘play’ has within dance teaching; Rachel Farrer (University of Bedfordshire) who's research is exploring tacit aspects of learning in dancers; and Maggie Killingbeck (University of Bedfordshire) presenting on the value of Laban’s analysis of movement in dance education.
The conference ended with a showcase of primary, secondary and youth dance held in the Laban Theatre, followed by the usual Dance Team run to the station to catch the train home!

redXco Residency
In
October half term, artsNK’s street dance company redXco worked with two dancers
from Boy Blue Entertainment (BBE). During the residency, they focused on
working on House, Hip Hop and Locking foundation styles within the Hip Hop
genre. They also began to work towards
their new dance piece which they will be performing at artsNK Youth Dance
Programme Showcase and the U.Dance County Platform – True Motion.
Nathaniel
‘Sweetboy’ and Gemma from BBE delivered the 3 day residency to a very high
standard. redXco learnt a lot from the 3 days and are extremely excited to put
into practice what they have learnt.
A
member from redXco said ‘I absolutely loved working with BBE, they are amazing
dancers and delivered some great choreography.’ redXco member, October 2013.

What a busy few weeks!
Whoa! The Dance Team have been incredibly busy over the last few weeks since Zygote Festival happened in Sleaford....
We had a great time working on the festival, especially creating performance pieces for St.Denys church, Bristol Arcade and commissioning professional aerialist, Alexandra Hofgartner and her producer Cat Boot, for the spectacular aerial performance on Eastgate Green. Post Festival, we ran open workshops for local adults to come and take part in some aerial silks and lyra (hoop)..... WATCH THIS SPACE FOR MORE WORKSHOPS COMING TO LINCOLNSHIRE SOON!
Since then, 3 members of the dance team took their EXTEND VTCT Level 2 qualification in Chair Based Exercise, enabling them to now be fully qualified instructors for the Vitality over 60's exercise classes (held locally). In addition, we've been very busy planning the start of DANCE FACTOR 2014!!! The popular young peoples project is back, better and ready to go! There are 10 weeks of FREE streetdance sessions for ANY young person aged 11-18 years.

What a busy week!
After last Sundays Zygote Festival, there was no rest for the Dance Team with another jam packed week ahead.
Monday through to Wednesday saw our Aerial workshops being held at Northgate Sports Hall in Sleaford. On Monday, participants were lucky enough to be taught by Joe from CircusMASH UK, who also recently trained members of the Dance Team.
Amy O' Sullivan, one of the Dance Artists from artsNK, came along to the workshops. When asked what she thought about the workshops, this is what she had to say "'After taking part in the aerial workshops for 2 days, I now miss being upside down and in the air so much! Although I prefered performing the still positions on the hoop, I gained more confidence on the second day of the silks. It's really refreshing to have such free workshops as it brings new opportunities for performance and to learn something new! Thoroughly enjoyed working with the circus professional and the artsNK dance team and hope to swinging from the aerial rig very soon :)!'
Keep a watchful eye on our Facebook page for more information on upcoming opportunities with the Aerial equipment, including more possible workshops!
redXco, working with Boy Blue Entertainment, were working on a piece based around the London Riots. Again the results look very impressive!
We also have exciting news! Dance Factor is back! It kicks off in just under a month, more details shall follow shortly so once again, keep an eye on our Facebook page for that happening! You can also keep up to date by following us on Twitter @Dance_Factor and liking the Dance Factor Facebook page!

ZoieLogic Dance Theatre
ZoieLogic Dance Theatre is an all male dance company blending 'powerful dance, submerging masculinity in immersive narrative and innovative mechanical set design to create an energetic and visceral world that gives audiences an unforgettable performance experience'.
The company shall be performing their latest piece 'Echo' which has been described as "Phenomenal... masculine high energy dance... the whole piece felt like Apocalypse Now, dance as theatre accompanied by beautiful music" - The Warf.
'Echo' delivers a high-octane fuelled evening of entertainment. Featuring a thumping original score created by award-winning Ivan Stott and a visually stimulating set, the performance sees five male dancers take to the stage to explore the theme of lost innocence, leaving the audience with an unforgettable experience.
The production has a strong narrative with a mix of physical theatre and dance elements and takes audiences on a journey of emotions and physical responses to situations. The work is highly physical and pushes the boundaries of contemporary performance.
5 male dancers are submerged in a world of choice, where masculinity is tested.
When is innocence lost?
What happens when Arthur is pushed to a point of decision, backed into a corner where only his choice matters?
This is an opportunity not to be missed! With tickets only costing £10 / £8 Concessions U18s £6, it's a great chance to see ZoieLogic Dance Theatre in action. It's also a great way to support the evolution of male dance and introduce new people to it. Take the chance to try something new whilst it's here in Lincolnshire!
Don't forget, if you're also under the age of 26, you can take advantage of the LOV Young Person's offer for this show! That means you can watch 'Echo' for just £5. All you need is one of the LOV flyers pictured above. You can get these from the Terry O' Toole theatre or the artsNK Dance Team.

End of year round up/coming up!
It’s the end of another busy year for the dance team! From
Dance Factor 6 to True Motion, our Inspiring Young Talent showcase and Primary
Dance Festivals, it has literally been jam packed! Not to mention our visit to
Breakin’ Convention, U.Dance Nationals and Aerial training. This year has been
a great year for Dance opportunities in Lincolnshire
and 2013-2014 is set to be bigger and better!
We have had amazing workshops and residencies and our Youth
Dance Companies kNacKer’d and redXco have gone from strength to strength. They
have also been lucky enough to perform at some of the biggest events in the
county , including the SO festival and Lincoln Dances. Also a special mention
to aDance who performed at the Sew Into Fashion event!
We are constantly working hard to bring opportunities to the
young people of
Throughout the Summer break, the Dance team have still been busy with events happening round the county. As we head into September there shall also be many more chances to get involved!
Photo: MichaelaartsNK |
On August 16th, we headed to Spalding for Music in the Marketplace where kNacKer'd had the chance to perform. After worrying the performance may involve rolling around in a few puddles, bright sunshine greeted the girls just in time and their piece 'Flaws' impressed the audience.
On Saturday 17th, kNacKer'd also performed at the NK Centre Family Fun Day, the girls also threw themselves into playing Rugby and the boys obliged by joining in a Rock n Roll workshop.

As we are now heading towards the end of the Summer break, and quickly towards September, our classes shall be resuming. We shall be holding auditions for both kNacKer'd and redXco (details to be posted on our Facebook page soon) and our new vertical dance and male breakin' group 'Jumpstart' classes begin!
Again all information shall be posted on our Facebook page very soon. Keep your eyes peeled!
You can also find out more about the auditions by clicking on the 'Events' tab on the blog.
End of Term Show
On Thursday 18th July, our End of Term show took place. Rather than the crazy, manic day which usually goes into organising our events, the End of Term show is a bit different. A more relaxed event, the show is a chance for our Youth Groups to celebrate their achievements with their parents and peers and to perform for everyone.
For some of our Youth Groups, it was their chance to present the Arts Awards they have been working on and building up throughout the year. It was also a chance for the teachers to recognise the hard work of their students by presenting awards for most improved and best performance. There were also two special recognition awards, given to two dancers who have put in 110% this year getting involved in everything they can.
With the success of our dancers and events this year, we are hoping for this to continue into the 2013-2014 term. With more opportunities to get involved, artsNK Dance is getting bigger and better!

Solidarity 2013!
When the word Solidarity comes to mind, you think of unity within a group of people. The artsNK Solidarity project aims to do just that.
This past Friday, 28th June, seven schools from around the area came together to showcase weeks of hard work. Performing to a sold out crowd at the Terry O' Toole Theatre, Year Nine and Ten students expressed themselves through a number of different dance styles and genres.
The project gives young people the chance to build confidence and highlight how important dance is, in education. Throughout the day, the groups were treated to two workshops with judges Luke Robson and Chelsey Barnes. Luke held a Vogueing workshop which you can check out below. Chelsey from Lincolnshire One Venues, spoke to the groups about what they would like to see in Lincolnshire which prompted some interesting answers. The groups were also under the watchful eye of the two other judges, Sam Sorrell and Catherine Lloyd, who were deciding on awards to be given out later in the evening. The groups were also treated to a performance by artsNK's kNacKer'd to show what can be achieved with hard work and to give a taster of what happens in classes run by artsNK.
With the freedom of picking an open theme this year, groups took this as a chance to present something different to the audience. Themes throughout the night ranged from African Praise Dance, exploring emotions and themes of good and evil, to emotive pieces where soldiers were leaving their families behind.
The competition was incredibly tough, with the judges having a hard time deciding on a winner. Finally, they picked Priory City of Lincoln Academy as the winners, with their African Praise Dance inspired piece. They were ecstatic with the decision, their cheers ringing throughout the theatre as the groups came off stage.
They shall now go on to perform at the School Games, taking place on the 10th July at Yarborough Leisure Centre.
Big congratulations to everyone who took part.

Aerial Training- the dance team try something new!
On Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th, the dance team went to Creation Climbing Centre in Birmingham to train with Joe from circusMASH UK in aerial silks and lyra.
What a painful two days!
We had a great time learning new tricks and holds on both sets of equipment with each of us finding some easier than others..... One thing is evident, we need a lot more strength!
On the silks, we worked on basic and Russian climbing as well as figure-8 foot locks and many, many wraps. We worked on various poses including double foot lock splits (see Amy below). We looked at:-
foot rolls, inverting from side wrap amongst many others.
On the Lyra (hoop), we all tried various mounts including straddle and side mounts (they are soooooo hard!). We worked on various poses including man in the moon, mermaid, stag, back balance straddle, half back balance, gazelle, amazon and lots more...... Have a look at the photos below for a peek at how we got along.
This is Amy doing Half Back Balance
This is Charlotte doing the Crucifix.

This is Emma doing the Stag.
Holly 's Gazelle Splits.
This is Charlotte & Holly doing Figure 8 foot lock & Cross back straddle.

We were extremely inspired by Joe's teaching and will continue to train and build confidence on the equipment. We are set to buy our own rig, silks and lyra VERY soon in the run up toZygote Festival, which will happen in Sleaford in October 2013. There will then be quarterly workshops, classes & intensives for children, young people and adults to get involved.
Joe (who taught us in Birmingham) runs circusMASH UK which is the leading circus company in the West Midlands. Contact him to book workshops, performances, intensives and other training in the circus disciplines. We would highly recommend it!

Summer Primary Dance Festival!
On Wednesday 22nd May,
the “North Kesteven School
and artsNK Primary Dance Festival” took place at the Terry O’Toole Theatre and
was a huge success. Once again, the shows were a sell out, with parents, brothers, sisters and relatives being treated to a night of street and contemporary dance.
Over the past 6 weeks, local primary schools had taken part
in this project and worked with a dance artist from artsNK. They worked together, to create a dance
piece based on the transition from a primary school to a secondary school. Also
performing in the show were some groups from North Kesteven
School .
Thank you to all the groups who took part from Redwood Waddington, Witham St.Hughs and The Meadows Primaries as well as Maneuver (Boys dance group), Transcendance ( Yr 7-8 girls dance group) and the Yr13 BTEC Dancers from NK School.

The
primary school children had a fantastic time watching the rest of the groups in
their technical rehearsals. For most of the children, it was their first time
performing on stage and you could tell they were extremely excited. The North Kesteven groups also enjoyed performing, and were a
very high standard.

Hello from Charlotte
Hi Everyone,
Some of you may already know me but I’m Charlotte the new Youth Dance Intern. I am graduating from the Unviersity of Lincoln BA Dance course in September but I have been volunteering and working for artsnk for over a year.
I have been very busy leading workshops for the North Kesteven School and artsNK Primary Festival. I worked with two groups from Redwood Waddington Primary School to create dances for the performance last night at the Terry O Toole Theatre. It was a brilliant evening and all the pieces from the primary schools and NK school groups were brilliant.
Now that this project has finished, I am working with a group for the Solidarity project. I worked on this project last year and am lucky to be involved again. The performance is on the 28th June so a few weeks left to perfect the piece!
I'm also helping to organise some workshops in the summer so keep your eyes peeled for those.

The dance team visit Breakin' Convention!
On Bank Holiday Monday (6th May), the dance team went to Sadler's Wells in London to watch and experience it's annual international festival of hip hop theatre; Breakin' Convention.
What is Breakin' Convention we here you ask?
Breakin' Convention has been producing THE critically acclaimed International Festival of Hip Hop Dance Theatre since 2004 at Sadler's Wells, featuring the very best, most influential artists from around the corner and around the world! This year's festival was it's 10th ANNIVERSARY! #10yearsstrong and the Monday evening performance featured UK Allstars- dance pieces presented by the best hip hop and streetdance groups in this country.
Who did we see?
We saw some top acts from the UK urban dance scene including Bad Taste Cru who presented their latest work "Faust". A mashup of swing, Charleston and bboying, this piece had us whooping and hollering! Bad Taste Cru (based in Newcastle) performed at Terry O'Toole Theatre earlier in the year, they delighted audiences in Lincoln, and they certainly didn't fail in London!
We also saw pieces by Birdgang Dance Company, Avant Garde Dance, Unity UK, Jukebox Collective and Company Decalage. The former company, Company Decalage, ran by Mickael Marso Riviere, have been to Lincolnshire before and Marso has taught many of our young people! The show also featured Impact Dance, led by Hakeem Onibudo- who Amy is undertaking leadership masterclasses with on the #ABLE programme until July.
Finally, the evening finished with some of the most jawdropping, original and innovative pieces of hip hop theatre we have ever seen....... ZooNation UK presented their latest duet with pro dancers Tommy Franzen and Teneisha Bonner. Intricate storytelling and raw physicality made this piece amazing. Kate Prince, ZooNation's choreographer, never fails to present entertaining dance. And the show ended with Boy Blue Entertainment's "Emancipation of Expressionism". Only one word can describe it - phenomenal. If you haven't seen Boy Blue's work, make time to see it.
If there's one thing we learnt about going to Breakin' Convention, it's that Lincolnshire needs more hip hop dance theatre in it's life. The dance team are going to do it..... #watchthisspace

U.Dance: True Motion 13
On Saturday 9th March, our True Motion event was
held at the LPAC in Lincoln. Eleven dance groups from around the area performed
to a panel of judges, hoping to win a place in the MY Dance Festival.
Throughout the day, rehearsals and workshops took place,
giving the young people a chance to learn new skills, find out more about dance
and interact with others. The commercial workshop, held by professional LA commercial
dancer Gareth Woodward, and a workshop held by Chelsey Barnes from Lincolnshire
One Venues, was met with a lot of enthusiasm from the participants.

In one of the commercial workshops.
Alongside the workshops, a number of dance professionals
held a Q&A panel for the young people taking part. They answered questions about
the dance industry and how they, themselves got to where they are now. This
proved very insightful for the participants of True Motion and soon the panel
were inundated with questions.
Photo: Michaela Soltys |
This meant
the judges had a very tough decision picking the winner.
After a lengthy and thought out discussion, the judges
picked NK School as the overall winners. Their war inspired, contemporary piece
impressed the panel and they shall now go through to the MY (Midlands Youth) Dance
Festival. This shall take place on 20th April at Nottingham Playhouse.

perform in Nottingham. They too, impressed the judges with their rock inspired performance.
Although there was only one place available in the MY Dance
Festival, all the groups should feel very proud of their achievements and performances.
We here at artsNK Dance are planning more opportunities for young people to be
involved, so keep a look out here on our blog, our Facebook page and Twitter.

What a week!
What a crazy week it has been for the dance team! From Wednesday 6th to Friday 8th February, artsNK held three consecutive showcases at the Terry O’ Toole Theatre.
Primary Dance Festival
It all kicked off with our annual Primary Dance Festival on Wednesday. This saw schools from around the area perform to a sell-out crowd. These included Bassingham Primary, NK School Yr. 10’s, Swinderby All Saints Primary School, NK School Yr. 7’s, Fosse Way Academy, Ling Moor Primary School and NK School Yr. 13’s. With over one hundred children taking part and two shows that night, it was a hectic day but everything ran smoothly.
Children of all ages and abilities took to the stage to show off a mixture of talents which impressed the audience. Each Primary group focused on the theme of moving onto Secondary School, and portrayed this in a number of different ways with help from our Community Dance Artist, Holly Arnold and our Youth Dance Artist, Emma Terzza.
Also working on the project with us were a number of the University of Lincoln’s 3rd year Sport Development and Coaching students. Not only did they help on the day of the show, but they helped throughout the project working alongside Holly and Emma with the Primary groups.
Inspiring Young Talent
On the 7th February, it saw the return of our Inspiring Young Talent showcase. Groups from around the area are given the chance to show off their talents and skills, whilst performing to a large crowd.
Due to popular demand, two IYT shows were held, which meant more groups had the opportunity to perform. On the second night, Friday the 8th, the line - up was a little smaller but still crammed with talent.
Again, the groups were from the NK and Lincoln area and featured all abilities and skills including redXco, our street dance company and LNRevolution who took part in this years Dance Factor competition.
Along with the help of the University of Lincoln’s 3rd year Sport Development and Coaching students, the two IYT shows were a success and we hope it inspired young people to get involved!
